Part 2 – Build a Windows Server 2008 R2 SP1 Cloud Foundation Test Lab in Less Than an Hour–BIOS Settings

Step 1: Part 1 – Build a Windows Server 2008 R2 SP1 Cloud Foundation Test Lab in Less Than an Hour (includes sysprep images) You should have your server up and running.

Step 2: Install your network drivers. If you need help with the network driver see: Network Trashed on My Lenovo W510 And The NIC Driver Will Not Install–So SIMPLE If You Know The Secret.  Your driver may be different but the above article will walk you through the typical steps to manually install even a troublesome driver.

Step 3: Enable virtualization features in the BIOS.

Bios Requirements for Enabling Hyper-V. Short video to show exactly where you might find these settings.

*X64 Server with Hardware Assisted Virtualization (Likely found under Configuration then “Virtualization” or “Processor”

  • Intel: Intel VT

  • AMD: AMD-V

*Hardware enables Data Execution Prevention [DEP] (Likely found under Configuration then “Security”)

  • Intel: XD bit (Execute Disable)

  • AMD: NX bit (no Execute bit)

*Hyper-V does not support Itanium (IA-64 processors)

*You CAN install windows without these settings, they are only important when you Enable the Hyper-V Role.

* “Hyper-V cannot be installed error” if not set when trying to enable role
